Cincinatti shall crumble…

Following the departure of Heinze and the freedom of Josef, I hope to see a revitalised ATL travel to Ohio.

Reports from Fox Soccer claimed that Heinze restricted water intake during preseason training to the extent the club doctors got involved.

Life has been difficult as an Atlanta player and as a fan of recent. Things just haven’t been the same. The passion, drive and love for ATL has not been evident for some time. A couple of managers down the line and none of them have matched up to Tata Martino. Players have come and gone, Miggy, Nagbe, LGP, Villalba, Gressel and the list goes on. However this season has seen the addition of Moreno, Sosa, Franco, Ibarra and many more, we should be full of confidence and ready to go…

However this has not been the case… Game after game we have seen high possession, lack of finish up top and plenty of mistakes at the back.

Let’s see how things go today!!! Vamos ATL!!!!

Here comes the Fire

Atlanta United vs Chicago Fire.

Atlanta United plays on the road again this weekend when they travel to take on Chicago Fire FC at Soldier Field. After a draw last time out against the New York Red Bulls, Atlanta is looking for its first road win of the MLS season. Chicago is coming off a 3-3 draw at home vs. Philadelphia Union. With a victory on Saturday night, the 5-Stripes could climb a few spots in the Eastern Conference standings.

Atlanta United created several good opportunities in the match against the New York Red Bulls last time out. Especially in the second half, the 5-Stripes controlled the action and nearly found a game-winner late when Miles Robinson’s header hit the post. Atlanta has been consistent in creating chances this MLS season. With the exception of one match, Atlanta has created at least seven chances in every league match.

Brooks Lennon in particular has been the team’s top creator in recent weeks. He ranks second in MLS with 33 chances created, while his crossing accuracy is first in MLS at 40.4 percent among players with 25 or more crosses. Atlanta needs to continue to create those opportunities and find the finishing touch to turn those chances into goals on Saturday.

Don’t be fooled by Chicago’s league standing

While Chicago currently sits in last place in the Eastern Conference standings, they are a team that possesses quality players that Atlanta needs to be aware of. The midfield duo of Alvaro Medran and Luka Stojanovic have been solid this season. Stojanovic leads the team with three goals, while Medran created five chances and bagged two assists against the Union last time out. Head Coach Raphael Wicky made a formation change to a 3-5-2 vs. Philadelphia, which gave wingbacks Boris Sekulic and Miguel Navarro more freedom on the flanks to attack. The Fire responded by scoring three goals, the most they have scored in a match all season. The midfield and flanks will be key areas for Atlanta United to watch for on Saturday night.

Keep a clean sheet on the road

Coming off a clean sheet performance against the Red Bulls last weekend, Atlanta United’s defense will look to carry that momentum into this week at Chicago. Brad Guzan made four saves to preserve the clean sheet last week. His save percentage for the season is 78.3, which ranks him eighth in MLS entering this weekend.

The backline for Atlanta was outstanding against New York. Robinson,Lennon and Anton Walkes each won 100 percent of their tackles.  Walkes led the team with six interceptions, which was the most by an Atlanta player in a single match since May 2018. The 5-Stripes have only kept one clean sheet on the road this year in the season opener at Orlando. They will look for another defensive effort like last week to keep Chicago off the scoresheet and bring home a positive result this weekend.

Kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. ET from Soldier Field in Chicago as Atlanta United visits Chicago Fire FC. Fans can tune in on Bally Sports South or follow on radio on Star 94.1 FM.

Game Day…Lets tame those Red Bulls..

Atlanta had their five-match unbeaten run snapped on Wednesday by New York City FC in a 1-0 defeat, while the Red Bulls second-half comeback fell just short, as they lost 3-2 to the New England Revolution.

With nine games played for Atlanta United in the regular season, the Five Stripes have blown several opportunities that could have put them higher than their current seeding, 10th in the Eastern Conference.

They appeared unsettled by a robust New York FC side on Wednesday, who put them under duress from the very beginning, making it very difficult for Atlanta to get into the game.

If not for a spectacular outing from goalkeeper Brad Guzan, who made a season-high six saves, the 1-0 defeat against New York could have been a lot worse, as Atlanta gave up plenty of quality opportunities and were outshot 18-6 on the night.

A great performance by their keeper went to waste in midweek, and it would be fair to say that Atlanta have squandered a lot of points recently, giving up back-to-back two-goal leads versus Nashville and Philadelphia, while also squandering a 1-0 lead against lowly Inter Miami.

Those six points lost could have moved Gabriel Heinze and his Five Stripes from 10th up to fourth place in the East standings.

They may not be in a playoff position at the moment, but they have shown that they can play well against the elite squads, drawing four games against teams who are currently in a playoff position, including the Seattle Sounders, Orlando City SC, the Philadelphia Union and Nashville SC.

Team News

Atlanta forward Josef Martinez and defender Ronald Hernandez are on international duty with Venezuela at the Copa America.

Josef at Copa America

Midfielder Emerson Hyndman is out with a cruciate ligament rupture, and striker Erik Lopez picked up cautions in two successive matches, meaning he will miss the game on Sunday through suspension.

The Red Bulls will hope their current top goalscorer Caden Clark can make the most of his time remaining in New York, with the 18-year-old set the join RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga at the end of this season.

Midfielder Youba Diarra is out with a muscle injury along with Aaron Long, who will not be available for some time due to an Achilles tendon rupture and midfielder Cristian Casseres is with the Venezuelan national team for the Copa America.

The Break is Over and soccer returns.

Following a few weeks away during the start of the Copa America, Atlanta are back in action. Its the one we’ve all been waiting for….

Our opportunity for redemption. Philadelphia overturned us with a 4-1 aggregate victory which sent us out of the Concacaf Champions League quarter finals. Now we have our chance to overturn this Loss. Philadelphia currently sit at 3rd after 8 games on 14 points, they have currently suffered losses from New York City and Inter Miami.

Atlanta are currently sitting at 10th, on 10 points after playing one game less. Our only loss coming from league leader New England Revolution. Atlantas main issue at present is allowing in silly goals, late on.

I am hoping to see changes today, we need to use our new youngsters, for example Rocco and Josh Bauer. Machop Chol was exceptional preseason yet has only seen a substitute entry so far this season. Heinze needs to shake things up and soon!

I believe we will be playing a 3-4-2-1 formation.

Breaking News

Emerson Hyndman

BREAKING NEWS
Emerson Hyndman Out for the Season!
The curse has struck again!
Atlanta United announced today that midfielder Emerson Hyndman suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee during training. The club said Hyndman will undergo surgery on a date to be determined to begin the rehabilitation process.
It’s safe to say that Hyndman will miss the remainder of the season and likely a good chunk of next year.
Hyndman was a key player under new manager Gabriel Heinze. The Texas native has started all seven MLS matches so far this season, and has only missed nine minutes of action in total.
Losing a such a core player could potentially see a change in tactics, but will obviously open up opportunities for others in what is a thin group of central midfielders on the roster. Franco Ibarra is most likely to take his place, but a more experienced Mo Adams will also be returning to the side soon after undergoing surgery for a sports hernia prior to the start of the season.

Jack Collison – From the Valleys to The ATL

Whilst still only 26 and a player at Peterborough United, Collison was confirmed as manager of their under-21 team whilst completing his coaching badges. Collison began managing the under-18 team in November 2015, and continued in the role after announcing his retirement from his playing career.

On 20 July 2017, it was announced that Collison had returned to West Ham United as under-16 manager. He left the role in June 2019 to coach at MLS team, Atlanta United. He was named head coach of Atlanta United’s Reserve team, Atlanta United 2 on June 3, 2021

Playing Career

Collison began his career with Peterborough United’s youth system in 1998, before moving to Cambridge United in 2000, where he stayed for five years. He then moved to West Ham United in 2005 and signed his first professional contract in 2007. Collison played 121 matches and scored 14 goals in seven seasons with the club. After missing a whole year through injury, he spent time on loan at Bournemouth and Wigan Athletic in his final season. He then joined Ipswich Town in 2014, but did not play a single match due to injury, before returning to Peterborough United in 2015 and played in 12 matches. Collison’s career was ended through injury in 2016 after 147 career matches. He was capped 15 times for Wales.

After leaving Cambridge United, the 17-year-old was offered a trial with West Ham and impressed Academy director Tony Carr enough to be offered a first year scholarship.

Collison continued his development under Carr and his staff at Little Heath before being made reserve team captain at the start of the 2007–08 season. That summer, the teenager also featured in pre-season friendlies against Hornchurch and Milton Keynes Dons. He made his first-team debut on 1 January 2008, when he came on as a substitute for the injured Freddie Ljungberg in their 2–0 Premier League defeat away to Arsenal. Collison was handed his first league start in place of the injured Mark Noble in a 1–0 defeat away to Bolton Wanderers on 11 April 2008.

Rise to first-team

Collison joined the first-team squad on the pre-season tour of North America where he appeared as a 71st-minute substitute for Scott Parker in the 3–1 win over Major League Soccer club Columbus Crew, followed by a 3–2 defeat to the MLS All-Stars. The 2008–09 season began with Collison in Alex Dyer’s reserve team, and a loan move to League One promotion-chasers Peterborough had been lined up. However, an impressive substitute appearance in the 2–0 Premier League loss at Manchester United on 29 October coupled by injury problems in the midfield convinced manager Gianfranco Zola that Collison would be better served by remaining at Chadwell Heath and training with the first-team squad.

Collison repaid Zola’s faith with more solid performances. He scored his first goal for West Ham, an 18-yard strike, on 8 November in a 3–1 defeat at home to Everton, after coming on as a substitute for the injured Matthew Upson to make his home debut. Collison’s good form earned him praise from Zola, who rewarded the 20-year-old with a new five-year contract extension in December, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2013. On Boxing Day, he scored the equaliser at Portsmouth and had a hand in the next two goals in a 4–1 rout. Collison scored his third goal of the season, the only goal of the match in a 1–0 win at home to Manchester City on 1 March 2009. Although he mostly played in centre midfield during his days in the reserves, he eventually established himself as first-choice on the left side of Zola’s midfield diamond.

In a 1–0 win away at Wigan Athletic three days later, Collison dislocated his kneecap while attempting to chest down a long ball and was ruled out for six weeks. He returned to the first-team two months later, coming on as an 82nd-minute substitute in a 1–0 win away at Stoke City. On 24 May, he finished the season on a high, by assisting Junior Stanislas to score the winner, in a 2–1 win at home to Middlesbrough. Collison ended the season having made 24 appearances in all competitions, before being named Young Hammer of the Year by Tony Carr.

On 23 August 2009, Collison played 89 minutes of a 2–1 defeat at home to Tottenham Hotspur, before learning that his father had been killed in a motorcycle accident, while travelling to the game. Two days later, he started a League Cup match against Millwall that went into extra time and ended 3–1 to West Ham. His teammates all wore black armbands to show their support. The match also featured a number of pitch invasions and violent clashes between fans outside the ground. After full-time, Collison left the pitch in tears visibly upset. During the post-match interview, manager Gianfranco Zola complimented Collison’s character in light of his father’s death. After missing most of September’s games due to the recurrence of the knee injury suffered at Wigan during the previous season, Collison returned to training in October and made his comeback on 9 October in a behind-closed-doors friendly against French club Valenciennes and scored one goal. He then marked his return to league action by being named in the starting lineup in a 2–1 defeat away to Stoke City eight days later. Collison scored his first goals of the season in consecutive matches, against Hull City and Burnley. Having not played since Wales’ 1–0 defeat to Sweden on 3 March 2010, on 7 May 2010, it was announced that Collison would be out for around nine months after undergoing knee surgery, having never fully recovered from the cartilage damage he suffered in the 2008–09 season.

Return from injury and promotion

After 14 months out through injury, Collison made his first-team return in a 1–1 draw with Blackburn Rovers on 7 May 2011.

On the opening weekend of the 2011–12 season, Collison came on as a 74th-minute substitute for Mark Noble in a 1–0 defeat at home to Cardiff City. Four days later, Collison committed his future to the football club by signing a new long-term deal with West Ham. On 15 October, Collison scored his first goal of the season in a 4–0 win at home to Blackpool. After just over a month out of the starting lineup, Collison returned in the final away game of the season against Leicester City, with West Ham needing to win to ensure the final automatic promotion place would be determined on the final day of the season. With the score at 1–1, Collison hit a 25-yard shot that beat Kasper Schmeichel giving West Ham the points needed. West Ham finished the season in third-place with 86 points, and would enter the Championship play-offs. On 3 May 2012, Collison scored twice in a 2–0 win away at Cardiff City in the first leg of the play-off semi-final, before West Ham won the second leg 3–0 to advance to final after a 5–0 aggregate scoreline. He also played the full 90 minutes in the play-off final as West Ham defeated Blackpool 2–1 at Wembley Stadium, securing an instant return to the Premier League.

International Career for Wales

Collison was eligible to play for Wales through his maternal grandfather and is related to John Gwilliam, a former captain of the Wales rugby union team. Born and brought up in England, Collison chose to play for Wales due to his Welsh ancestry. His then-West Ham teammate and former Wales captain Craig Bellamy had alerted Wales youth coach Brian Flynn about Collison’s eligibility. After observing the 19-year-old, Flynn named him in the squad to face Bosnia and Herzegovina under-21 in a UEFA European U-21 Championship qualifier.

Under-21

In November 2007, Collison made his debut for the Wales under-21 team in that match and scored in a 4–0 rout. He made further appearances in a 4–2 win over France under-21 on 20 November 2007, and a 4–0 win over Malta under-21 on 5 February 2008, in which he scored Wales’ third goal. He was in the squad that narrowly lost to England under-21 in the qualification play-offs and were denied a place in the 2009 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. While in the under-21s, he formed a burgeoning partnership with Aaron Ramsey of Arsenal in central midfield.

Senior team

Collison made his senior debut for Wales in a friendly win away at Iceland on 29 May 2008. Bellamy praised the young midfielder saying, “I’ve seen him every afternoon at West Ham and he does extra training. If you want to give this career a good go then you get the rewards and that seems to be how Jack is looking at it.” After the death of Collison’s father, national team coach John Toshack gave him the choice whether to make himself available for selection. Having played in West Ham’s last two games, he declared himself available for the World Cup qualifier against Russia. This match would confirm Collison as a full Wales international, as his previous six caps all came in friendlies. He did not play, however, as he had to attend his father’s funeral, which took place on the day of the match. A calf injury ruled Collison out of Wales’ remaining World Cup qualifying matches.

With Collison back to full fitness, Toshack named him in the 23-man squad for the 14 November friendly against Scotland. Collison later withdrew from the squad after picking up a knock during the weekend match against Everton. In November, Collison was in the final nomination for the Welsh Young Player of the Year award along with Simon Church and Aaron Ramsey.

On 6 September 2011, Collison made his competitive debut in the Euro 2012 qualifier against England and put to rest further speculation about his future at the international level.

ATL vs NSC – a dominant start to a Lack of Composure.

Another positive performance turned sour for Altanta United against Nashville yesterday.

Another game of dominating possession. Half time we went in 2 goals up with 68% possession. 90 minutes we’ve surrendered the win, conceded two goals and are lucky to scrape one point from the fixture.

Atlanta United came flying out of the gates from the very beginning of the match and for the second game in a row a Miles Robinson pass led to a quality chance for Atlanta United to score. This time, the center back was credited with his first MLS assist after finding Marcelino Moreno running in behind Nashville’s backline for a fifth minute goal to put Atlanta ahead of its opposition.

That goal makes Moreno Atlanta’s leading goalscorer in MLS action with three goals this season. Robinson continued to play exquisite passes to his teammates throughout the match, and he finished the first half with two chances created, 49 touches and 41 passes, the most of any player in those three categories through the first 45 minutes. It’s been quite the evolution for Robinson.

Erik Lopez also secured a “first” today, scoring his first goal for the Five Stripes in the 51st minute. Moreno picked the ball up in Atlanta’s half, carried it into the attacking third and found Bello out wide. Bello then crossed into the path of the unmarked Erik Lopez for his first career Atlanta United goal. Both Bello and Moreno were credited with an assist in the buildup to the goal.

“It was a beautiful feeling to score my first goal for Atlanta United, and it felt amazing to do it in this stadium,” Lopez said. “It’s something that I’ll always remember for the rest of my life.”

For most of the match, Atlanta’s attack looked as good as it had all season, dissembling Nashville’s 400+ minute clean sheet run in the process. Pair that with Atlanta’s fairly good defensive record and it was easy to imagine that Atlanta would walk away with three points. That’s when Hany Mukhtar stepped in.

SB Nation

Moments after Brad Guzan made a save with the literal tip of his foot, Nashville’s Mukhtar got one past Guzan in the 81st minute. Mukhtar, an unmarked forward in Atlanta’s penalty area, scored Nashville’s equalizer two minutes later to make it 2-2.

Changes are needed

And I dont mean every game

We seem to have an unsettled starting 11. As we see around the world, the established top teams find their 11 and they stick to it, making the odd change for injuries or absentees. Atlanta at present are changing their team every week. We need a pairing at CB which I thought would be Franco and Robinson, however Sosa is their one week, the next week Walkes is in. This isn’t the only issue, one week we have 3 at the back with Sosa as central with Bello and Lennon attacking. The next week 4 at the back with Bello and Lennon kept back. Its confusing to watch and it must be unsettling to play. Sosa has been a clinical member of this 2021 team, however where does Heinze want him to play? Is he a CDM, CB or a CM??

We need a fixed formation and a fixed 11, this is the only way the mistakes and sloppiness will stop. Players need a structure and a strong team chemistry to win competitions and its something we don’t have at the moment.

This fixtures outcome was the difference between going second with a game in hand over the leaders to ending up 8th sat a midtable. Now only 2 wins from 7 games.

Atlanta United were held to a second consecutive stalemate on the road by Seattle Sounders in a 1-1 draw at the CenturyLink Field on Sunday.

Raul Ruidiaz opened the scoring for the hosts after just six minutes, before Josef Martinez restored parity in the 86th minute from the penalty spot.

Gabriel Heinze’s men are currently fifth in the Eastern Conference as things stand, five points off the top with a game in hand.

Their next assignment comes up against a team whom they have beaten in two of the three previous meetings prior to this weekend’s clash.

However, the only defeat in that time came in the sides’ most recent encounter, which was a 4-2 thriller at the Nissan Stadium back in September.

Nashville SC were victorious at home for the second game running courtesy of a narrow 1-0 triumph over Austin FC on Monday.

Randall Leal’s strike 10 minutes before half time proved to be the winner for his side on a day when they squandered a number of good opportunities to seal the deal.

Team News

Nashville’s Abu Danladi is still yet to feature this term owing to a muscle injury which is set to keep him out of Saturday’s game.

Brian Anunga and Daniel Rios are also ruled out of the visitors’ trip to Atlanta through knee and foot injuries respectively.

Ezequiel Barco is expected to be unavailable for the hosts as the Argentine remains sidelined with a hamstring problem.

Jurgen Damm and Alan Franco are major doubts for the clash having both sat out the draw versus Seattle last time out.

Josef Martinez is still yet to score on home turf this season, but he has found the back of the net in each of his last two games on the road.
